The Fire We Make (At the Bar)

This share is a little unorthodox but there is a funny story behind this video. LITTLE DOES THE WORLD KNOW, Dinosaur and I are sitting behind one of those doors (in the beginning check-in scene) casually enjoying cocktails while this was being filmed.

Sometimes you just go into a bar and they're filming an Alicia Keys x Maxwell video, right? Yeah I know, totally random.

Oh but the drinks were really good. If you're in New Orleans check out The Columns, especially at happy hour. Fantastic atmosphere, great drinks, LOTS of seating (a high priority in my book because ain't nobody got time to be standing around all night).

mAd CiTy 1

So often I'll be riding through New Orleans when I spot something utterly ridiculous. Thankfully I know have a cell phone who's camera loads fast enough for me to paparazzi shot the cray.

Which is why I decided to start a new WotS series, "mAd CiTy: This City is Full of Freaks".

Spotted at Washington Ave and Magazine St.
"I just blue myself."
Either the Blue Dog came to life or somebody let Tobias Fünke handle their dog

Spotted at Tulane and Broad (that's right. I hang out at Tulane and Broad.)
"Pharmacy & Restaurant"
Wait what? What REASON is there behind a Pharmacy & Restaurant combination!? I am so confused!

VooDoo fest Loophole?

I don't know, but this may be a cheaper way to get Voodoo tickets. I doubt a CD pre-order and a t-shirt are the same price as Voodoo tickets.....unless they only let you in to see Deadmau5....but even then, who's checking?

Photobucket

Besides, you also get a Deadmau5 CD and T-shirt! Win win win. Signing up to be a HT+1 member is free and you can choose to ignore the emails about irrelevant merchandise.

Lenny Kravitz crashes the VOP Choir in New Orleans for "Fly Away"

How great it must be for Lenny to randomly hear performers singing his song and how great it must be for the kids to get to perform it with him! If only I had chance encounters like this every time I sing in my car. Props Lenny and kids, Props.

Freaky.

WHO DAT say we can't print WHO DAT!

This is an amazing letter senator David Vitter sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell basically telling NFL to SUCK IT and back off on trademarking "Who Dat":

Dear Commissioner Goodell:

I was stunned to learn recently that the NFL is taking the position that it owns the exclusive trademark of the term "Who Dat" and has even threatened legal action against some mom-and-pop merchants selling t-shirts using the term. I would urge you to drop this obnoxious and legally unsustainable position and instead agree that "Who Dat" is in the public domain, giving no one exclusive trademark rights.

This letter will also serve as formal legal notice that I am having t-shirts printed that say "WHO DAT say we can't print Who Dat!" for widespread sale in commerce. Please either drop your present ridiculous position or sue me.

"Who Dat was probably first heard in New Orleans minstrel shows well over 130 years ago. Much more recently, but before it was used in connection with the Saints, it was used as a rallying cry by St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. In the 1980s it was adopted by Saints fans in a completely spontaneous way. Only later did any legal persons, including the Saints and the NFL, try to claim it through registration.

Perhaps more significant than this history, "Who Dat" has become part of New Orleans and Louisiana popular culture. For the NFL to try to claim exclusive ownership of it would be like me registering and trying to claim exclusive ownership of the terms "lagniappe" and "laissez les bons temps rouler!"

Under Paul Tagliabue's leadership, the NFL was an unbelievable partner in helping us recover and rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Thank you again. We look forward to your dropping your "Who Dat" position so that this partnership can continue without strain or blemish.

Sincerely,

David Vitter
Junior Senator of Who Dat Nation

HEAR HEAR: Theresa Andersson

If you haven't tapped into New Orleans local music, you need to NOW. I've recently been obsessed with this amazing compilation of nola music put together by The Gambit. One of my favorite tracks (besides the Givers track. Duh. Givers is a GIVEN. Pun totally intended.) is Birds Fly Away by Theresa Andersson, and after seeing this old video of her appearance on Conan, I love her even more!

Benedict Weezy

Lil Wayne is apparently choosing the Minnesota Vikings over his hometown New Orleans Saints because of his undying love for Brett Farve. WTF WEEZY?! Not okay. Not okay.

Best. Food Tutorial. EVER.

And I'm actually GIDDY AS F because this is IN FACT my go to sushi at Ninja. The Special Crunchy Roll is SO GOOD that I hate it a little bit because I can't be as amazing as the special crunchy roll is. Naturally I'm going to have to try and make this for myself because Miami sushi is NOTHING compared Ninja. NOTHING IS ANYTHING compared to Ninja.

NINJA SALAD TUTORIAL PLEASE.

Deadmau5 in MIAMIIIII

What's so cool about this guy is his trademark false head. He wears this giant red mouse head when he performs...it has to get hot as balls in there. Well he probably has some kind of BAMF air conditioning installed inside, IDK.

But yeah, funny story. The first time I saw his name I was like..."Wtf? Dead Mau 5? What does that even mean. " Then I realized it was actually Dead Mau5, like Dead MOUSE. Oh he he he, funny funny.

Deadmau5 being dead.

But yeah, if you're in the area....check it out check it outttttt.

4TH

What is a 4th of July without fireworks? I went to the annual fireworks "dance battle" in New Orleans and brought along my baby. I haven't shot fireworks with it before and....don't really know the settings TO shoot fireworks anyway...so I just ended up experimenting. And I found this bomb A setting that creates a really kaleidoscopic, abstract, colorful, awesome picture. And these are all fireworks!

The Governator? More like Mayor Durden.

Check this tee for sale at Storyville. Brad Pitt for the next mayor of New Orleans! I'd certainly watch the political jargon shows on TV if he was mayor.

$20 at Storyville

Here are the 13 reasons they give that Brad Pitt should be mayor of NOLA. I'm especially feeling no. 10 and 13.

Reason #1 - He's Qualified

Rather than having to make vague and unpersuasive connections between clearly unrelated qualifications such as, say, franchise executive and governing abilities, the qualifications of our candidate are plainly obvious: as the worldwide audience of Homer’s Troy can attest, Mr. Brad Pitt clearly has the stomach for the job, not to mention the shoulders to carry the burden of governance.

Reason #2 - NOLA ♥'s Brad Pitt

By bestowing the great office of Mayor of our city upon Mr. Pitt, we, the citizens, are afforded the opportunity to say thanks for the many wonderful things this gentleman has already done for us. What better way to show our heart-felt appreciation than to present to him the mayoral office, the patronage trough, the cornucopia of our great city, that which we hold so dear and is ours to bequeath?

Reason #3 - Lagniappe

If we elect Brad Pitt mayor, Angelina Jolie would be the First Lady of New Orleans.

Reason #4 - Technology and Gastronomy

Instead of technology executives vying for malfunctioning anti-crime camera installation contracts and lap dances, movie moguls from everywhere will lobby the mayor to get a table on Galatoire’s ground floor for the Friday before Mardi Gras all-afternoon lunch.

Reason #5 - Publicity

Publicity and photo opportunities will chase our Mayor, instead of the Mayor chasing publicity and photo opportunities.

Reason #6 - Urban Planning

We will not have to rename a street to honor his name, as Pitt Street already exists.

Reason #7 - City Council Relations

Stacy Head will be nice to the new Mayor.

Reason #8 - Economics

Instead of executive travel expenses depleting our budget, the city’s coffers will be filled through generous personal appearance fees earned by Mr. Pitt as our elected leader and ambassador.

Reason #9 - Convention Business

New Orleans will become the magnet for conventions of professional women’s organizations worldwide. The warm glow of pink Cadillacs will illuminate our Southern nights. This mass of sensually charged femininity will attract male visitors eager to contribute their economic stimulus.

Reason #10 - Jazz Fest

Instead of being greeted by the ubiquitous presence of Shell (God bless them!), visitors to Jazz Fest will be welcomed at the main entrance by our Mayor enthroned on the King of Rex Float, officiated by his Secretary of Music, Quint Davis.
GHP Says: Can we be greeted by Maddox too? That FURCE KID.

Reason #11 - Rebuilding

Rather than relying on Aussie eloquence and narrative creativity or malfunctioning federal and state agencies, Mr. Pitt, as our chief executive will, instead, lead us, the local Pittwomen and Pittmen, in the fight against blight, crime, poverty and lack of humor. Dressed in period costumes and assisted by experienced producers, set builders, make-up artists, and camera operators, this cast of thousands will launch our Renaissance epic in weekly reality sequels.

Reason #12 - Transparency

Instead of having to sue for the release of public records, or to attempt to restore accidentally deleted emails, we can learn everything about our first executive from the pages of the National Enquirer and People Magazine.

Reason #13 - Integrity

Rather than governing our city to achieve fortune, fame and a book deal, our candidate already has achieved fortune, fame and MOVIE deals.

BRAD PITT WE LOVE YOU BBY! BENJAMIN BUTTON WAS A GOOD MOVIE.

New Years Post

Happy New Year!!

This year I decided it was time to experience something new for New Years: Downtown New Orleans New Years at Jackson Square. So I bundled up in LAYERS (read: Tights, undershirt, over shirt, jeans, socks, coat, scarf) and made my way to the festivities.

It was a...new kind of experience. Most like a mixture of Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras (The huge, annoying, stagnant and massive crowd of Jazz Fest mixed with the FRIGID/FREEZING temperature of Mardi Gras).

Jazz Fest 2008 17
Typical Jazz Fest Crowd, DO NOT WANT!!!!!!

Antarctica 2006
Typical weather conditions during night Mardi Gras parades: FREEZING, DO NOT WANT!!!!!!!

But I made the journey, here are some picturas of the night.

Photobucket
We caught the ferry downtown, where we found the definition of odd couple. You can see the man (roughly 6'3") covering his woman (roughly 4'0") with his jacket as they either a: looked out the window, b: exchanged saliva, or c: kept each other warm with their body heat. They were very sketch. At one point the lady was caressing her man's dredlocks......Just a little New Year's Lovin'! After the couple got tired of akwardly standing at the window, they akwardly sat down and started rolling cigarettes. True love.

After getting off the ferry we made our way towards Jackson Square, and I SWEAR it was like 10 degrees colder downtown than on the westbank. There were tourists from Alabama and Utah all over the fucking place, I don't know why. And tons of people yelling nonsense about how LSU cremed Georgia Tech (as if it's a big shocker or something...).

There were also quite a few people wearing....pretty much nothing...and I mean I have nothing against short clothes but DAMN it was like 30 degrees. We don't need any martyrs. I myself bought a short dress to wear, but had to sacrifice that when I realized a massive temperature shift from Antarctica was moving to New Orleans.

Photobucket
Alas little black dress, I couldn't wear you on New Years...but I WILL wear you on every other holiday!!

Photobucket
While walking down St. Peter's I saw the smallest Ambulance vehicle I've ever seen. I called Europe-bulance. Fue cute.

Photobucket
So we keep going down St. Peter's until we hit the wall....the densest wall of people ever I SWEAR. I've never been so intimate with people's stomachs and balls before...it was akward. And it didn't help that there was a concert set up in the middle of the street. Anyway 20 akward drunks later, we break through the crowd and arrive at Cafe Du Monde which is surprisingly open. And we decide to eat beneigts until it's time to countdown. Unfortuneatly since Cafe Du Monde is THE ONLY coffee place open there are huge lines for both take out AND tables.

Photobucket
But hey, fuck lines we snuck in and stole an empty table and got food. And life was good...enjoying beneigts....then all of a sudden the world is like "HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!" And we realize...we totally missed the countdown and the fleur-de-lis dropping and everything. Oh well...what better way to spend the new year than eating at Cafe du Monde?

Photobucket
Happy New Years Lovin'!!

Photobucket

Photobucket
And what's the New Year without some fireworks? It's nothing compared to the Taiwan shit though...Damn those Chinese.

How did you spend your New Years?

Walking in a southern winterwonderland

I get a phone call at 5 AM this morning. "It's snowing!!" I look out the window, and there's legit flakes of snow falling from the sky. I immediately jump out of my bed. Literally, jump out of my bed. I'm still on the phone and am trying to find some pants and a jacket to put on. My mind is still slowly waking up and I'm trying to think and talk on the phone at the same time. I finally remembered where I put my ski jacket, grab that and run out of my apartment yelling "IT'S SNOWING!!!" in hopes of waking up my roommates. I run down 3 flights of stairs, still on the phone, and then stand outside staring at up at the sky, alone, for a good 3-4 minutes. Sooo pretty!

Woo hoo! Snow in Louisianaa! You didn't lie weatherman, oh no you didn't! Let's just hope I can make it to my finals today hmm?
